In his book The Politics of Prudence, Russell Kirk wrote of the importance of reading others, noting that “modern people are dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, able to see farther than their ancestors only because of the great stature of those who have preceded us in time.”
Only when we consider the past can we accurately speak to the future. The most effective rhetoricians are quick to draw upon the wisdom of those “greats” who have gone before. They leave a lasting legacy, pearls of timeless wisdom for those willing to mine.
