It’s late Wednesday evening and I’m headed off to bed. I’m tired but happy, having just finished my draft of my final paper for the semester. It’s rhetorical but not unintelligible, interesting but not too “punchy”, grounded but positive on Churchill’s skill as a rhetorician. I mean, really, what do you critique about Winston Churchill? Who would dare? Not I. I tread lightly and with reverance.
Ever since my first year of teaching middle school, I become a zombie when the clock strikes 9 pm. I even fall asleep during James Bond movies. But get me writing about rhetorical style and suddenly the world becomes clear. Tired? Yes. Thrilled? Totally.
I think I’ve discovered what I’m supposed to do when I grow up.

There is a strength and endurance in knowing who you are, and what you’re calling is. Whether for a season, or as it grows into a lifetime direction.
I think back to the movie Chariots of Fire and the famous quote from Eric Liddell, the Scottish Olympic (1942) athlete AND missionary to China; “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.” Eric Liddell (1902-1945). Who among us does not long to be fulfilled, and feel His pleasure? Therein is true joy and contentment, sufficient to overcome trials finish the race well.
